Telephone consultation with the pain management nurse

In some cases you may be given an appointment for telephone consultation with the specialist pain management nurse, who will call you at the appointed time. This happens when the doctor who is treating you wants to know whether a trial nerve block treatment (for example, a nerve root sleeve injection) has resulted in (temporary) pain relief. If this is the case, the nurse will give you an appointment for your definitive nerve block treatment. You will receive this appointment by post.

You will also be given an appointment for a telephone consultation with the pain management nurse when you have been put on new medication and the correct dosage needs to be established. If necessary, the dosage will be adjusted, depending on the effects you report, and an appointment may be made for a follow-up telephone call. If you are experiencing too many side effects or other problems, or if you have other questions, the nurse will consult the pain management specialist and call you back, preferably the same day.

Can I telephone the doctor who is treating me, or other staff members?

Some UPCM pain specialists offer a limited telephone consultation service for their own patients. They will phone you at the appointed time.

Since the times when pain management nurses carry out their telephone consultations may vary, there is no fixed timetable. The receptionists at the UPCM Outpatient Pain Clinic can provide you with more information and can make an appointment for the pain management nurse to telephone you.
