Multidisciplinary Pain Team

What is the Multidisciplinary Pain Team?

Since pain is a subject dealt with by several different medical specialities and pain disciplines, UPCM has put together a team in which all the main disciplines are represented.

These disciplines include anaesthesiology/pain management, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, psychiatry, pain rehabilitation medicine, medical psychology, and gastrointestinal and liver diseases.

The pain team meets weekly to discuss the patients treated at UPCM from their various points of view. So the treating pain specialist tells the patient that his case will be discussed at a meeting of the Multidisciplinary Pain Team. This team, which includes the patients' own pain specialist as well as others, will discuss what would be the best treatment for the patients and/or what further examinations are needed. If necessary, other specialists may be invited to attend the team meeting.

The pain specialist will inform the patient what has been discussed at the pain team meeting. If necessary, the patients will be given an appointment at another outpatient clinic, an option that the pain specialist will already have discussed with the patient at the previous consultation.
