Vascular Pain

What is vascular pain?

Narrowed blood vessels in your legs may imply that not enough blood is reaching your leg muscles when you are walking, and this causes pain. The blood vessels may be so severely narrowed that the lack of oxygen causes damage to the tissues. The damaged tissue releases all kinds of substances that activate tiny receptors at the ends of the nerves in the legs, called nociceptors. The activated receptors send signals (electrical impulses) through the nerves to the spinal cord. From there, they are passed on to the brain, giving you a sensation of pain.

Vascular pain involves nociceptive pain, the type of pain caused by a sprained ankle. But since a lack of oxygen may damage not only the tissues but also the nerves, it can cause neuropathic pain in addition to the nociceptive pain.
